Survey Reveals Parents Lack Knowledge of Youth Mental Health Programs

A recent survey conducted by Harris Poll Canada indicates that while the majority of parents feel equipped to identify early warning signs of mental health challenges in their children, many remain unaware of local support programs. Specifically, the survey revealed that 90 percent of parents believe they can recognize signs of mental distress. However, 44 percent reported a lack of knowledge regarding early intervention programs available in their communities.
The findings highlight a significant gap in awareness, prompting officials to stress the importance of accessible mental health resources. Maureen Brennan, director of IWK Mental Health and Addictions, emphasized the range of services available for youth struggling with mental health issues. In an interview with 95.7 NewsRadio, she outlined the support mechanisms in place in Nova Scotia.
Available Programs for Youth Mental Health Support
Brennan noted that the IWK and NS Health Mental Health and Addictions Program offer various resources designed to assist youth. “They have ambulatory community mental health and addictions clinics,” she stated. “We have clinicians across Nova Scotia schools.”
In addition to these clinics, the program provides prevention and promotion services that engage with families and caregivers within the community. Brennan highlighted the importance of these services, which are designed to bolster support systems for youth and their families.
The specialized services offered are well-integrated with numerous supports tailored to the specific needs of young individuals and their caregivers. The aim is to create a holistic approach to mental health care that not only addresses immediate concerns but also promotes long-term well-being.
For parents seeking more information about available programs, Brennan encourages them to visit the websites of the IWK and NS Health. These platforms provide comprehensive details on the mental health resources accessible in the region.
As mental health awareness continues to grow, it is crucial for parents to become informed about the support systems available to them and their children. By bridging the knowledge gap identified in the survey, communities can enhance the mental health landscape and ensure that youth receive the help they need when they need it most.
