Rotary Club Funds New Paediatric Heart Imaging for Local Hospital
The Rotary Club of Sault Ste. Marie has made a significant contribution to local healthcare by funding new paediatric echocardiography equipment for the Sault Area Hospital. This initiative, supported by a donation of $40,930 generated from the club’s Take Your Pick Draw, addresses an urgent need for specialized heart imaging services in the region.
Paediatric echocardiography is increasingly vital in the Algoma District, especially as services transition to the Sault Area Hospital. With the new equipment, two technologists have been trained to provide specialized imaging directly on-site. This advancement allows children and their families to receive quality care locally, eliminating the need for travel to distant facilities such as SickKids in Toronto.
Teresa Martone, Executive Director of the Sault Area Hospital Foundation, expressed her gratitude, stating, “Thanks to the Rotary Club of Sault Ste. Marie, we can bring this level of specialized paediatric imaging to Sault Area Hospital. For NICU patients, the mobile unit means scans can be done without leaving their room, providing comfort and continuity of care when it matters most.”
The new echocardiography service is designed with a smaller probe suitable for infants, enabling healthcare teams to detect urgent, life-threatening conditions at an early stage. This capability often reduces the need for patients to travel out of town for care, allowing families to remain close during critical times.
The funding for this initiative was made possible through the success of the Rotary Club’s annual Take Your Pick Draw. Currently, tickets for this year’s draw are on sale for $20 at various lottery outlets, convenience stores, and online at rotaryssm5050.ca. Sales will close at 21:00 on December 22, 2023, in preparation for the grand prize draw scheduled for December 27, 2023.
Pino Caputo, co-chair of the Take Your Pick initiative, highlighted the club’s ongoing commitment to supporting children in the community. “What a fantastic way to kick off the 2025 draw,” he said. “Our club has always focused on supporting children in Sault Ste. Marie, and we’re proud that this donation will help ensure they receive the care they need right here at home. This wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of our community and everyone who purchased a ticket. Thank you for helping us give back.”
The Rotary Club of Sault Ste. Marie extends its heartfelt thanks to the community for its continuous support, which enables meaningful contributions like this to enhance local healthcare services.
