Radiothon Exceeds $100,000 Goal to Boost Local Health Care
The recent 12-hour Keep Life Wild Radiothon successfully raised more than $111,000 to support health care initiatives at the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH) in Ontario. The event, organized by local radio partners BOUNCE 104.1 and Pure Country 106, surpassed its initial fundraising goal of $100,000, with donations continuing to be accepted.
During the radiothon, which took place on October 10, 2023, listeners heard numerous compelling stories from health care providers and patients who have benefitted from RVH services. According to Josh Duncan, program director at Pure Country 106, a last-minute donation played a crucial role in exceeding the target. “I’m not sure who kicked in the dime, but it put us over the top,” he stated.
The funds raised will contribute to the RVH’s Keeping Life Wild campaign, which aims to gather $100 million for enhanced medical services, new technologies, and improved patient facilities across the Simcoe Muskoka region. This campaign addresses critical issues such as long wait times and the need for local treatment options, as highlighted by Mary-Anne Firth, a board member of the RVH Foundation. “It doesn’t matter what the challenge is; people want the care closer to home,” Firth emphasized.
Community Support and Matching Donations
This year, PureHealth Pharmacy pledged to match all donations up to $50,000, effectively doubling the impact of contributions made during the event. The radiothon has historically generated significant support for RVH, totaling over $2 million in previous years. “This community is so unbelievably generous,” Firth remarked. “We’re so lucky to have the people that we do in the region; they step up time and again.”
Throughout the day, on-air host Jason McCoy remarked on the importance of sharing personal experiences to underscore the event’s purpose. “Hearing the voices first-hand pushes the purpose of the event,” he said. The stories highlighted the necessity of equipping local health care providers with the tools they need to deliver quality care.
Ongoing Donations and Future Goals
As the radiothon concluded, donations remained open, allowing the community to continue supporting RVH. Contributions can be made online or in person at the RVH Foundation office, located at the hospital’s main entrance on Georgian Drive. The office is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and people can also reach out by calling 705-739-5600.
The success of the Keep Life Wild Radiothon not only reflects the community’s commitment to local health care but also serves as a reminder of the ongoing need for resources to enhance medical services in the region. The RVH Foundation continues to work towards its ambitious fundraising goals to ensure that residents have access to the care they need without traveling far from home.
