Quebec Cannabis Recall: Elevated Arsenic Levels Prompt Product Withdrawal
Health Canada, in collaboration with Quebec-based producer Great White North Growers Inc., has announced a recall for specific dried cannabis products under the Lunaire brand due to detected elevated levels of arsenic, a toxic heavy metal. The recall was made public on Thursday, affecting 3.5-gram packages of Lunaire Nouvelle Lune dried cannabis, identified by lot number 1001470A, which was packaged on October 31, 2025. These products were distributed through authorized retailers, including the Société Québécoise du Cannabis (SQDC).
The presence of arsenic, a naturally occurring element, raises significant health concerns. Prolonged exposure to arsenic has been associated with an increased risk of various health issues, including cancer, skin damage, and potential harm to the lungs, heart, brain, kidneys, and reproductive system. The element can also pose risks for pregnant and breastfeeding individuals.
The recall was initiated following non-routine additional testing conducted by Great White North Growers, which revealed the contamination in the affected lot. Approximately 869 units of the product were sold between October 31, 2025, and January 13, 2026, through licensed cannabis retailers across Quebec. To date, there have been no reported health complaints or adverse reactions linked to the recalled products.
Consumer Guidance and Safety Measures
Both Health Canada and Great White North Growers are advising consumers who purchased the affected products to cease usage immediately. Customers can return unopened items to the retailer where they were acquired or dispose of opened products safely, ensuring they are out of reach of children and youth.
For those experiencing any health or safety concerns related to this or other cannabis products, Health Canada encourages the completion of their Cannabis Reporting Form, available online. It is important to note that this recall specifically pertains to the lot mentioned above; other Lunaire cannabis products remain unaffected.
As the situation develops, consumers are urged to stay informed and vigilant regarding product recalls to ensure their health and safety.
