The Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act was enacted on May 4, 2017, by the Government of Canada as a response to the escalating opioid crisis. Its primary aim is to alleviate fears surrounding police involvement, encouraging individuals to act swiftly in life-threatening situations. The law offers limited legal protection to those who seek emergency assistance during an overdose, ensuring that they are not penalized for possessing controlled substances at the scene.

Under this legislation, individuals who call for help are protected from potential charges related to simple possession of drugs and from violations of conditions linked to possession, such as probation or parole.
