P.E.I. Extends Deadline for Doctors to Choose Patient Loads
The provincial government of Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.) has extended the deadline for physicians to determine their patient loads. Originally set for January 31, 2024, the new deadline allows doctors until February 28, 2024, to make their decisions regarding how many patients they wish to see. This change follows concerns raised by the P.E.I. College of Family Physicians about the pressures associated with the initial deadline.
In December, an agreement was reached among the Medical Society of P.E.I., the Department of Health and Wellness, and Health P.E.I. that aimed to address workload targets for physicians, allowing some to reduce their patient rosters. Feedback gathered from town halls and ongoing discussions indicated that more time was necessary for doctors to assess the available practice models and the relevant data needed for their decisions.
Health P.E.I. confirmed the extension in a statement, emphasizing its commitment to supporting physicians in navigating their options. “To support this, Health P.E.I. has extended the deadline to the end of February for physicians to choose their preferred practice model,” the statement read.
Concerns about the original agreement have persisted among family physicians. In a recent letter, the P.E.I. College of Family Physicians reported that a significant majority—77 percent—of responding doctors believed the agreement could lead to physicians leaving the province. Some indicated they might alter their practices in ways that could affect patient access to care.
The Medical Society of P.E.I. has engaged in mediation with the province and Health P.E.I. regarding the operational guidelines outlined in the new Physician Services Agreement, which is set to take effect in April 2025. This agreement stipulates that each family doctor should see 24 patients per day, with the average appointment lasting around 15 minutes. Health P.E.I. also proposed that a full-time family physician maintain a patient roster of 1,600 individuals, a figure that Health P.E.I. CEO Melanie Fraser later clarified was intended as a maximum.
The recent extension has garnered varied responses from P.E.I.’s political landscape. The P.E.I. Green Party announced a petition advocating for the deadline extension, which gathered nearly 800 signatures in just two days. The party expressed its intention to ensure that forthcoming negotiations produce an agreement supported fully by family doctors.
Dr. Krista Cassell, president of the Medical Society of P.E.I., acknowledged the province’s decision to extend the deadline, commending Health P.E.I. for recognizing the potential risks of a rushed implementation. Cassell noted that a proper implementation of the agreement could enhance the recruitment and retention of physicians within the province.
“We applaud Health P.E.I.’s attention to their own accountability with this decision to extend the deadline for physicians to select a practice model,” Cassell stated. She emphasized the need for additional time for discussion and problem-solving to ensure that the health system remains effective for the residents of P.E.I.
The ongoing dialogue reflects broader challenges within the healthcare landscape, highlighting the importance of collaborative approaches between medical professionals and government entities to ensure quality care for all.
