Ontario Study Reveals Dramatic Rise in Youth Psychosis Rates
A recent study conducted in Ontario indicates a significant increase in the rates of psychosis among younger generations. The research highlights a troubling trend, with new diagnoses of psychotic disorders, including schizophrenia, rising by **60 percent** among individuals aged **14 to 20** from **1997 to 2023**.
The study analyzed data from **12.2 million** people born in Ontario between **1960 and 2009**. Findings suggest that those born between **2000 and 2004** are estimated to have a **70 percent** greater rate of psychotic disorder diagnoses compared to their counterparts born between **1975 and 1979**. This dramatic rise is raising questions about the underlying causes and implications for mental health services.
Impact of Improved Access to Care
Dr. **Daniel Myran**, a physician and scientist at the **Bruyère Health Research Institute**, the **Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES)**, and **North York General**, noted that early indications suggested an increase in psychosis rates among younger individuals. This observation emerged during earlier research evaluating Canada’s cannabis policy. The magnitude of the increase in this latest research, however, surprised him.
Myran emphasized that the findings necessitate further exploration of potential causes. Individuals diagnosed with psychotic disorders face significant health challenges, including higher rates of illness and premature death, often requiring extensive healthcare and social support.
Despite some limitations in the study—particularly regarding the availability of data for older cohorts—it is evident that the number of individuals diagnosed with psychosis has risen meaningfully over the past few decades. Improved access to mental health care, particularly since the early **2000s**, may partially explain the uptick in diagnoses. Ontario has implemented effective early intervention programs, such as the **On Track: First Episode Psychosis Program** at **The Ottawa Hospital**, which has been operational for two decades.
Multiple Factors at Play
While these programs may enhance detection of psychosis, Myran believes that various other factors contribute to this trend. He stated, “It raises concerns that there are some social or environmental changes occurring that are causing an increase.”
Continued research is essential to uncover the reasons behind this rising incidence. Myran pointed out that substance use is a significant factor that warrants attention. “The use of substances, especially earlier in life, is associated with the development and worsening of psychotic disorders,” he explained, noting that substance use rates in Canada have increased over the past **two decades**.
The collaborative research was conducted by experts from ICES, **The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute**, **Bruyère Health Research Institute**, and **North York General**. Understanding the dynamics of this troubling trend will be crucial for developing effective prevention strategies and early interventions for mental health support in Ontario and beyond.
