Ontario Launches Free Flu and COVID-19 Vaccination Campaign
Ontario has initiated a vaccination campaign, making flu and COVID-19 vaccines available to everyone aged six months and older. This program aims to protect families and communities during the upcoming respiratory illness season. Vaccines can be obtained at participating pharmacies, public health units, and through doctor and nurse practitioner offices across the province.
Importance of Immunization
Sylvia Jones, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health, emphasized the significance of vaccination, stating, “Getting immunized is one of the most effective ways to protect yourself, your loved ones, and our communities.” As respiratory illness season approaches, she encourages everyone in Ontario to ensure they are up to date with their flu and COVID-19 vaccinations, which are provided free of charge, deemed safe and effective.
Receiving both the flu and COVID-19 vaccines simultaneously is not only safe but also recommended. This approach minimizes the need for multiple visits to healthcare providers. Additionally, adults aged 75 and older can receive free immunizations for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) through the vaccines Abrysvo® or Arexvy. This initiative builds on last year’s expansion of RSV prevention programs.
Healthcare Leaders Advocate for Vaccination
Dr. Kieran Moore, Chief Medical Officer of Health, underscored the role of immunization, stating, “Immunization remains one of the most powerful tools in our toolbox to prevent serious illness and hospitalizations.” He noted that the fall season presents an opportune time for eligible individuals to receive their flu, COVID-19, and RSV vaccines, highlighting that these vaccinations are safe, convenient, and vital for protecting vulnerable populations.
Healthcare professionals across Ontario are joining the call for vaccination. Natalia Kusendova-Bashta, Minister of Long-Term Care, remarked on the importance of these programs, stating, “Staying up-to-date with routine and recommended immunizations helps protect the health and safety of our long-term care staff, residents, and their caregivers.”
Raymond Cho, Minister for Seniors and Accessibility, encouraged seniors to take advantage of the vaccination opportunities, asserting that these programs contribute to their ability to live healthy and independent lives.
Furthermore, Justin Bates, CEO of the Ontario Pharmacists Association, expressed pride in the role pharmacists play in facilitating access to vaccines, stating, “As trusted and accessible health-care providers, pharmacists are proud to continue to support Ontario’s vaccination efforts.”
Dr. Zainab Abdurrahman, President of the Ontario Medical Association, reinforced the message, urging everyone to receive their flu and COVID-19 vaccines, describing them as safe and effective methods to protect the community, particularly its most vulnerable members.
Finally, Deepy Sur, CEO of the Ontario College of Family Physicians, highlighted the role of family physicians in preventive care, encouraging individuals to consult their doctors regarding seasonal or routine vaccinations.
Ontario residents can access information about their vaccination eligibility by consulting healthcare providers or their local public health units. The provincial government is committed to providing residents with resources to maintain their health and safety through initiatives like “Your Health: A Plan for Connected and Convenient Care.”
