Nova Scotia Launches Free RSV Vaccination Program for Infants

The government of Nova Scotia has announced a new initiative to provide free respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccines to infants under eight months old. This program will run annually during the RSV season, beginning on October 15, 2023, and continuing until April 30, 2026. The vaccine will be administered to newborns before they are discharged from hospitals, while other eligible infants can receive their doses through their primary healthcare providers or public health services.
The initiative aims to protect vulnerable infants from RSV, a common respiratory virus that can lead to serious complications such as bronchiolitis and pneumonia. In a press release, Michelle Thompson, the Minister of Health and Wellness, emphasized the importance of the monoclonal antibody protection the vaccine offers. “The monoclonal antibody protection for infants provides strong and instant protection against RSV. So when baby leaves the hospital to come home, they have a good defense,” she stated.
By providing this vaccine, the province aims to alleviate pressure on emergency departments and the overall healthcare system. The vaccination program is part of a broader strategy to improve public health and prevent severe respiratory illnesses among infants, who are particularly susceptible to the virus.
Earlier this year, Nova Scotia began another vaccination program, offering RSV vaccines to adults aged 75 and older starting in September. This move underscores the commitment of provincial health authorities to protect vulnerable populations against RSV and its potentially severe consequences.
The free RSV vaccination program is expected to have a positive impact on the health of infants in Nova Scotia, providing peace of mind for parents and caregivers during the RSV season. As the program unfolds, health officials will monitor its effectiveness and make adjustments as necessary to ensure that the province’s youngest residents receive the best possible care.
For more information about the RSV vaccination program and other health initiatives in Nova Scotia, residents are encouraged to visit the provincial health department’s website or contact their local health services.
