Nova Scotia Government Faces Pressure Over Cobequid Health Centre Expansion

The future of the expansion of the Cobequid Community Health Centre in Lower Sackville remains uncertain, as the Nova Scotia government appears to be wavering on commitments made nearly three years ago. Originally announced as part of a comprehensive health-care expansion plan by Premier Tim Houston in December 2022, the project included the addition of 36 in-patient beds and an assessment for the expansion or replacement of the emergency department.

During the announcement, officials indicated that construction could commence in 2025. However, the lack of recent updates has led to concerns among local stakeholders. On Wednesday, members of the NDP caucus held a news conference outside the health centre to highlight the absence of information regarding the promised expansion.

NDP Leader Claudia Chender criticized the government, stating, “This is a government that says that they are a government of action… and in this facility behind me, we have seen nothing.” She emphasized the growing frustrations of community members who have yet to see any tangible improvements in health care services at the Cobequid.

Community demand for health services has surged in recent years, with the population of Lower Sackville growing significantly. This increase has placed added pressure on the health centre, which does not operate a 24-hour emergency department and has had to turn away patients at times. Just earlier this month, Paul Wozney, the Sackville-Cobequid MLA, highlighted an incident where patients experienced waits exceeding 70 hours for care due to overcrowding.

Wozney reported that a doctor at the facility had reached out to express concern about the situation. He subsequently contacted Health Minister Michelle Thompson on November 5 but has yet to receive a response. Wozney reiterated the need for the government to fulfill its commitment to improve health care, stating, “Tim Houston and Michelle Thompson need to keep their promise to fix health care and provide the people of Sackville with the peace of mind that they deserve.”

The Health Department acknowledged the ongoing need for community assessment but did not provide a clear timeline for the Cobequid expansion. “Through the master planning process, we will gain a better understanding of the needs of the community,” a department spokesperson said, indicating that no final decisions have been made regarding the project.

As residents await clarity on the future of the Cobequid Community Health Centre, the pressure on the Nova Scotia government to deliver on its health care promises continues to mount. The community’s need for answers remains urgent, reflecting broader concerns about health service accessibility in the region.
