North Central Health Care Foundation’s Fundraiser Shines with Dance
The North Central Health Care Foundation hosted a successful fundraiser featuring a “Dancing with the Stars” event on November 19, 2023, at the Kerry Vickar Centre in Melfort. The initiative aimed to raise funds for pediatric equipment needed by medical staff at the local hospital. Organizers were thrilled by the event’s turnout and the community’s response.
Peggy George, past chair of the North Central Health Care Foundation, highlighted the pivotal role of Dinah Olson, an emergency room nurse, and Jennifer Peterson, who collaborated to plan the event. George shared that Olson had previously hosted a similar event and recognized the potential of a dance fundraiser to meet the foundation’s needs. “She (Dinah) is an ER nurse at the hospital, and in conversation with one of the doctors, Dr. David Boyle, they discussed the urgent need for better pediatric equipment,” George commented.
The lineup of dancers included local healthcare professionals and community members, such as Dr. Eden Strydom, Dr. Yemi Laosebikan, and Melfort MLA Todd Goudy, showcasing a diverse representation of the community’s commitment to healthcare. The event featured a group dance by nursing staff to “9 to 5” by Dolly Parton, adding a lively touch to the evening.
The fundraiser concluded with a significant donation of $37,141.89 from the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation, which George noted is crucial for the foundation’s goals. “I know how hard it is for foundations to raise money, so when another foundation steps up to support us, it’s truly remarkable,” she stated.
Community Spirit and Collaboration
George praised the extensive efforts of the organizing committee, particularly recognizing the dedication of Olson and Peterson. “They organized everything, from the dancers to the sponsors. The amount of work they did was absolutely incredible,” she expressed. The event not only raised funds but also fostered community spirit, drawing over 500 attendees.
The judges awarded the Judges’ Choice Award to Dr. Danielle Desjardins and Brian Farley, while the People’s Choice Award went to Dr. Robert Steffan and Evie Steffan. George noted that each dancer brought their own unique flair, making the performances diverse and engaging. “Every dance was so different, and the energy was palpable,” she remarked.
Choreography for most of the performances was provided by Chisa Glendenning, with the “Nurses” group dance choreographed by Bree Tallon from Dancers Edge. George described the event as exceeding all expectations. “It was a royal treatment for everyone involved, and the joy on the dancers’ faces was unforgettable,” she said.
Impact on Pediatric Care
The funds raised will directly benefit the Melfort Hospital by enhancing the pediatric care available to local families. George emphasized the importance of community involvement in healthcare initiatives. “Everyone who participated understands the significance of what the foundation does,” she stated.
The event also served as an opportunity for those not typically involved in dance to engage in a unique experience. “None of these people are professional dancers; some had never danced before. The pressure they faced was immense, but the joy they expressed during their performances was truly special,” George shared.
As attendees enjoyed the lively atmosphere, George expressed her anticipation for the event’s recording, which she plans to revisit. The collaborative effort behind the fundraiser exemplifies how local foundations can come together to support essential healthcare services.
The North Central Health Care Foundation hopes to continue its mission, leveraging community events like this to improve medical care in the region. As George reflected on the evening, she expressed gratitude for the continued support from both the healthcare professionals and the broader community, ensuring that the needs of pediatric patients are met with compassion and dedication.
