Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services (NLHS) is set to open the new Gander Community Health Centre later this month, with the aim of enhancing health care delivery and attracting more professionals to the region. The facility will accommodate a family care team and provide mental health and addictions services for Gander and the surrounding Gander Bay area.

The centre is designed to improve access to health care while addressing the recruitment challenges faced by NLHS. Approximately 50 staff members have already been recruited locally, although certain positions, including a nurse practitioner and a family physician, remain open. “When you build it, they will come. And I’m a firm believer in that,” said Janet Morgan Little, the health authority’s central zone director for primary and rural health care. She expressed optimism that the opening of the centre will attract additional healthcare providers.

Transforming Mental Health Care Delivery

A key focus of the Gander Community Health Centre is the approach to mental health care. Mimie Carroll, the regional director for mental health and addictions services, highlighted the importance of moving mental health services out of an acute care hospital setting. “We want to create an environment where clients can come and feel comfortable about their care needs,” Carroll explained. She referred to the concept of a “hospital without walls,” indicating that patients will receive their services in a more welcoming community setting before returning home.

The establishment of the centre comes with a significant investment from the provincial government, amounting to $24 million for a 20-year lease on the building. This investment aims not only to enhance service delivery but also to create a supportive environment for patients. Patients can access primary care services through Patient Connect N.L., with those not currently connected to a family care provider being encouraged to seek assistance at the centre.

Supporting Expecting Mothers

In addition to general health services, the Gander Community Health Centre has partnered with women and children’s health initiatives within NLHS to offer comprehensive care for expecting mothers who may lack a care provider. “When moms are pregnant and they’re expecting, their needs are definitely higher. And we want to make sure that they’re taken care of,” said Morgan Little. This focus on maternal health reflects a broader strategy to ensure that vulnerable populations receive appropriate support.

As NLHS expands its services, similar facilities are being developed across the province. One such centre is anticipated to open in the Bishop’s Falls area, alongside another in Grand Falls-Windsor. The overarching goal remains clear: to improve health care availability and recruitment in Newfoundland and Labrador, ultimately enhancing the well-being of the communities served.

With the opening of the Gander Community Health Centre on the horizon, local residents and health professionals alike are hopeful for positive changes in the region’s health care landscape.
