MacKenzie Drugs has officially ceased its Canada Post services, a relationship that spanned over 50 years, citing ongoing instability within the Crown corporation as a key factor for the change. The last day for Canada Post operations at the pharmacy, located on North Railway, was January 10, 2026.

Owner Dana Castillo Welz expressed her concerns regarding the recent challenges posed by Canada Post, particularly the impact of postal strikes. “It’s always been our goal that we wanted to serve our patients and our community, and we think right now is the best for us to get rid of it,” Castillo Welz said. She noted that many customers have voiced similar frustrations about the reliability of postal services.

The decision to discontinue Canada Post services comes after a series of strikes that have strained the longstanding partnership. Castillo Welz mentioned the competition that has emerged in the delivery market, indicating a shift in how the community accesses postal services. “We tried to find a way to keep Canada Post viable for business, but they weren’t really willing to figure out a solution. At the end of the day, with all the strikes, we weren’t delivering a service that was consistent,” she added.

As MacKenzie Drugs moves forward, the space previously used for postal services will be repurposed to enhance its pharmaceutical offerings. Castillo Welz emphasized that the pharmacy remains committed to its core mission. “We will always be a pharmacy first before any other services we may provide,” she stated. The expanded services will include more opportunities for prescribing, travel consulting, and collaboration with palliative care providers and addictions counsellors.

Customers who previously received Canada Post packages at MacKenzie Drugs will have their deliveries redirected to the nearest Canada Post location. Notifications regarding this change have already been sent to affected customers.

Despite the challenges posed by the discontinuation of Canada Post services, Castillo Welz assured that MacKenzie Drugs is continuing to thrive and adapt to meet the needs of the community. The decision marks a new chapter for the pharmacy as it focuses on enhancing its health-related services.
