Kirby Dach’s Return: Canadiens Weigh Cautious Approach
The health of Kirby Dach remains a key focus for the Montreal Canadiens as they prepare for the upcoming 2023-2024 season. Concerns are rising regarding the forward’s ability to endure a full 82-game schedule, particularly after his history of knee injuries. Recent practice sessions in Brossard suggest he is making progress, but uncertainty lingers about his readiness for the season opener.
The Canadiens face a crucial decision regarding Dach’s role as training camp approaches. Arpon Basu, in his latest edition of The Basu and Godin Notebook, highlights that even if Dach is fit to participate in camp, it does not guarantee his presence in the lineup from day one. Basu draws parallels to the treatment of David Reinbacher, who dealt with a serious knee injury last year.
Cautious Management of Knee Injuries
Reinbacher’s experience serves as a cautionary tale for the Canadiens. Upon his return, the club implemented a strict protocol to prevent further complications. He was restricted from playing two games within a 24-hour period and occasionally sat out practices to alleviate strain on his knee. This careful management proved essential for his recovery.
Dach’s situation is even more delicate. Given his previous knee injuries, the Canadiens must prioritize his long-term health. A third injury in three years could be catastrophic for his career. Therefore, it is plausible that Dach may miss the beginning of the season, even if he is deemed fit for practice.
The Canadiens have every reason to adopt a conservative approach with Dach. His potential absence at the start of the season would be a significant setback, but a cautious strategy could ensure he returns fully fit and capable of contributing significantly to the team in the long run.
As the Canadiens navigate these decisions, fans are left to wonder how the team’s strategy will unfold. The franchise’s approach to player health and injury management will be under scrutiny as they aim to balance immediate needs with the future of their young talent.
