Kendall County Health Department Sets Five-Year Community Priorities
The Kendall County Health Department has identified four key health priorities for the next five years: behavioral health, substance abuse, food security, and maternal and child health. This decision follows extensive feedback gathered from local residents and stakeholders through a community survey aimed at shaping the department’s Community Health Improvement Plan for 2021-2026.
The health department’s process involved soliciting input from the public, particularly through a survey that reached nearly 500 participants. The survey findings were presented at the recent Community Health Summit Breakfast, where RaeAnn VanGundy, the Executive Director of the health department, expressed satisfaction with the turnout. “That was our goal,” she stated. “We wish we could have exceeded that.”
In July, the health department hosted a Community Partner Assessment Event, which attracted about 80 attendees. During this event, local leaders and organizations discussed various health issues, focusing on strategies to address health inequities within the community. The insights gained from both the community survey and the assessment event have been instrumental in determining the department’s priorities.
Among the objectives outlined in the Community Health Improvement Plan are initiatives to connect vulnerable populations to resources that alleviate socio-economic burdens. Additionally, the plan emphasizes the importance of supporting mental health, raising community awareness regarding vector-borne diseases, and enhancing overall health education.
The health department noted the rising concerns regarding vector-borne diseases such as Lyme disease and West Nile virus, which can be transmitted by ticks and mosquitoes. Educating the community on preventive measures is a critical aspect of the department’s strategy moving forward.
Overall, the newly established health priorities reflect a comprehensive approach to address pressing health issues facing Kendall County over the next five years. The health department’s commitment to engaging the community and prioritizing their needs sets a strong foundation for improved health outcomes in the region.
