Kateri Memorial Hospital Centre (KMHC) is initiating a comprehensive revision of its Board of Directors’ constitution. This update aims to modernize the hospital’s governance structure and ensure compliance with evolving provincial healthcare policies. According to Karonhiio Curotte, Vice-Chairperson of KMHC’s Board of Directors, the proposed changes will create a more transparent and easily navigable document by consolidating various amendments made over the years.

Curotte explained, “The amendments have been added over the years piecemeal. We figured we would have it done, laid out once and for all in a way that’s more clear, easier to follow and updated to 2026.”

The revision process commenced last month when KMHC announced a call for professional consultants to conduct a thorough review of the constitution. This call for proposals remains open until tomorrow, and KMHC has already received three responses from community members interested in participating in the process.

Long-Term Commitment to Governance Improvement

While KMHC does not have a fixed timeline for completing the revision, Curotte speculates that the process could extend up to a year. “It’s not going to be a quick process,” she noted, emphasizing the depth of the review required.

Following the internal assessment, KMHC’s Board of Directors will present the proposed amendments to stakeholders, including employees and the public. Curotte highlighted the importance of community involvement in this public organization, stating, “We can’t just say ‘here it is’ and they don’t have any say in it.”

The procedural update aims to enhance the board’s understanding of the hospital’s needs and align its operations with contemporary healthcare standards. Wendy Skye-Delaronde, a community member representative on the board, expressed enthusiasm for the initiative. “It’s so exciting,” she said. “I think it’s really nice to have a document like this. I like to see stuff like: where does that come from? How come we’re doing things that way?”

As KMHC embarks on this important governance revision, the organization demonstrates its commitment to transparency and stakeholder engagement, setting a course for effective leadership in the years ahead.
