The boards of Health Sciences North (HSN) and the Health Sciences North Research Institute (HSNRI) have announced significant leadership changes, appointing David McNeil, PhD as the new president and CEO of both organizations and promoting Dr. Pankaj Bhatia to the role of chief of staff for HSN. These appointments were revealed on October 3, 2023, marking a pivotal moment for the institutions as they prepare to develop a new strategic plan.

David McNeil returns to HSN after a five-year tenure as CEO of Brant Community Health Care in southwestern Ontario. Previously, he dedicated 28 years to HSN, spending more than two decades on the executive team. He takes over from Dominic Giroux, who left in June 2023 to lead Hôpital Montfort in Ottawa. Board chair Stéphan Plante praised McNeil, stating, “David personifies excellence and is an expert on the challenges and opportunities facing health care in northeastern Ontario.”

With a robust educational background that includes a Bachelor of Science in nursing, a Master’s in health administration, and a PhD in rural and northern health, McNeil has a deep understanding of the healthcare landscape. He began his career in 1991 as a nurse in the James Bay community of Attawapiskat. Expressing his excitement about returning, McNeil commented, “I am thrilled to return to HSN and HSNRI. It is known provincially as an institution of health care excellence and a place of tremendous opportunity for those working in the sector.”

Dr. Pankaj Bhatia, who has been with HSN for 12 years, will succeed Dr. John Fenton as chief of staff. Bhatia has served as the medical director of the HSN simulation lab and is recognized for his commitment to quality improvement in healthcare delivery, particularly in the context of northern Ontario’s diverse cultural needs. Plante expressed enthusiasm for Bhatia’s new role, noting, “We are so excited to have Dr. Bhatia in this role,” highlighting his dedication to continuous improvement and patient care.

Bhatia, an award-winning physician who graduated from the University of Western Ontario, has also contributed significantly to education and mentorship at NOSM University, where he has served as an associate professor and program director for the general surgery residency program. In his new position, he will collaborate closely with HSN’s medical staff and administration to ensure the delivery of quality and safe medical care to patients.

Both appointments were unanimous decisions by the board, reflecting a clear confidence in McNeil and Bhatia’s abilities to guide HSN and HSNRI through the upcoming strategic initiatives. The timing of these appointments aligns well with the hospital’s plans for future development, ensuring strong leadership as they navigate the evolving healthcare landscape in Ontario.
