Health Canada Recalls Cannabis Products Over High THC Levels

Health Canada has issued a recall for two cannabis products due to discrepancies in the reported levels of THC, the primary psychoactive component in cannabis. The products, identified as Wintermint Chillows and Cinnamon Chillows, were found to contain THC levels exceeding those stated on their packaging. This recall affects consumers in the provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, and Ontario.

The recall notice highlights that the products, designed for use by placing them between the gum and cheek, contain over 10 mg of THC in some units. There is also significant variability in THC levels between individual pouches, which raises concerns about the potential for over-intoxication. Health Canada states, “The elevated and inconsistent levels of THC in each pouch may make it difficult to make informed decisions regarding your cannabis use.”

Consumers are being warned that using these products could lead to temporary adverse health effects associated with THC overdose. Symptoms may include confusion, disorganized thinking, physical and mental impairment, anxiety, panic, decreased blood pressure, and elevated heart rate. In rare cases, excessive consumption of THC can trigger severe reactions such as psychotic episodes characterized by paranoia, delusion, or hallucinations. These effects could necessitate a visit to an emergency department or hospitalization.

Individuals currently in possession of Wintermint Chillows and Cinnamon Chillows are advised to cease their use immediately. They should return the products to the place of purchase or dispose of them safely, ensuring they are kept out of reach of children or youth.

Since the legalization of cannabis in Canada in 2018, there have been multiple recalls of cannabis products due to inaccuracies in THC labeling. This ongoing issue raises concerns about consumer safety and the need for stringent quality control measures in the cannabis industry.
