Halton Healthcare has received provincial approval and funding to expand hospital capacity in the Halton region, adding up to 123 acute care beds at both the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH) and the Milton District Hospital (MDH) over the next two years. This initiative aims to enhance access to timely hospital care and stimulate job creation in both construction and long-term healthcare sectors.

The expansion will make use of previously shelled space at OTMH and introduce new capacity at MDH. Shelled space refers to unfinished areas within hospitals that are designed to accommodate future growth based on community needs. “The expansion is about putting patients first. As our communities grow, we’re making sure our hospitals grow with them so that every person who needs care can receive it when they need it most,” stated Melissa Farrell, president and CEO of Halton Healthcare.

The demand for hospital services in Ontario is increasing significantly, particularly as the population aged 75 and older in Halton is projected to double within the next 20 years. The newly added patient spaces will include modern private and semi-private rooms, thoughtfully designed to promote comfort, dignity, and recovery. Construction work within existing hospital infrastructure is expected to minimize disruptions and expedite completion timelines.

Provincial leaders have lauded this investment as a vital step toward improving healthcare access in the region. “Our government is making historic investments to build a stronger, more connected healthcare system that puts patients first,” said Doug Ford, Premier of Ontario. He added, “The expansion of Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital and Milton District Hospital means more families will get the convenient, world-class care they deserve.”

Other officials echoed the significance of this project. Health Minister Sylvia Jones and Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy emphasized the positive impact this expansion will have on the local community. Members of Provincial Parliament (MPPs) representing Oakville and Milton ridings also expressed strong support. Local leaders, such as Gordon Krantz, Mayor of Milton, commented, “This investment means more patients in Milton will get the care they need, closer to home.” Rob Burton, Mayor of Oakville, added, “It feels so great to have a provincial government that does its part to keep up with the growth we all are working to accommodate.”

The expansion is projected to be completed within two years, allowing Halton Healthcare to effectively meet the growing demands of the community while enhancing overall capacity across the regional healthcare system. This strategic investment signifies a commitment to improving health services and ensuring that quality care is readily available for residents in Halton.
