Former CFL Star Glenn Kulka Takes Action for Ottawa’s Homeless

Former Canadian Football League (CFL) player and WWE star Glenn Kulka has taken to the streets of Ottawa to support the homeless community. At 61 years old, Kulka’s journey has been marked by personal struggles and a newfound commitment to helping those facing similar challenges. His involvement with the charity S.O.S. Steps off the Street aims to provide essential support to individuals experiencing homelessness and addiction.
Kulka’s life has been a rollercoaster of highs and lows. Once celebrated for his athletic achievements, including playing for teams like the Edmonton Eskimos and the Ottawa Rough Riders, he has faced significant personal battles, including addiction and mental health issues. He openly acknowledges the toll his past has taken on him, stating, “I don’t spend much time dwelling on it these days.”
In March 2000, Kulka hit rock bottom. Struggling with addiction to various substances, he found himself contemplating suicide while out with his dog, Rocco. The moment he realized he could not harm his pet became a pivotal point in his life. “That’s what saved my life,” he said, emphasizing the importance of a second chance. Following this incident, he sought help, entering detox and rehabilitation programs, which led him to a path of recovery and faith.
With his past firmly behind him, Kulka’s focus has shifted to making a difference in the lives of others. He joined S.O.S. Steps off the Street, a volunteer-led organization founded by Gerald Jorgensen, which aims to assist those in need. The program not only distributes food and clothing but also fosters a sense of community among participants. Jorgensen, who has struggled with addiction himself, described the initiative’s mission: “We empower individuals experiencing homelessness to transition from the streets into addiction recovery.”
Kulka’s contributions to the initiative are significant. He participates in outreach efforts, helping to distribute essential resources to those in need. His personal experiences resonate with many he encounters, allowing him to build trust quickly. “Are you sick and tired of being sick and tired yet?” is a question he often asks, encouraging others to seek help.
Reflecting on his journey, Kulka understands the importance of living in the present. Despite the physical and mental challenges he faces, including brain damage from years of contact sports, he finds fulfillment in his work with the homeless. He remarked, “I’m in a good place… as long as I can do this kind of work, I can fill my soul.”
Kulka’s story is not just one of redemption but also a testament to the power of compassion and community. He views his involvement with S.O.S. Steps off the Street as a way to give back and support those who are battling their own demons. His faith plays a crucial role in this mission, guiding him to help others in their darkest moments.
As Kulka continues his work, he emphasizes the importance of empathy and understanding for those experiencing hardship. His life lessons drive his commitment to making a positive impact, proving that even in the face of adversity, one can find purpose and hope.
