Farmer Celebrates Rare Birth of Quadruplet Calves in Ontario
A remarkable event unfolded on a farm in the small community of Ruthven, Ontario, where farmer Abram Knelsen welcomed the birth of quadruplet calves. This extraordinary occurrence took place on March 5, 2024, when one of his Aberdeen Angus cows gave birth to four healthy calves in a single afternoon.
Knelsen, who has spent many years raising cattle, expressed his astonishment at the rare event. “To me, it is a miracle. Yes, it is,” he stated, speaking in Low German, his first language. “It was a surprise to me. I was the happiest guy on Earth.” As of the following afternoon, the calves were already moving around and calling for milk, showcasing their vitality.
The odds of a cow giving birth to quadruplets are approximately one in 700,000, according to data from the BBC, while the likelihood of all four calves being born alive is much lower, at just one in 11 million. “This is a thing that doesn’t happen too often,” Knelsen noted, highlighting the rarity of having all four calves healthy.
Knelsen emphasized that the birth of the quadruplets occurred without any medical intervention. “There was nothing involved,” he asserted. “This was the natural breeding. Like Nature would give it.” The group consists of three male calves and one female heifer, all sired by Charlie, the Black Angus bull on the farm.
The news of the quadruplet births spread rapidly through the family, thanks to updates shared in a group chat. Knelsen’s daughter-in-law, Christine Knelsen, recounted the excitement. “He said, ‘Look, we have twins.’ And we were like, that’s amazing. That’s never happened on the farm before,” she recalled. “Half an hour later, he says, ‘I lied to you guys: There’s three.’ Everybody was just like, that’s insane. And then, 10 minutes later, he was over the moon. He says, ‘There’s four.'”
The arrival of the quadruplets has increased Knelsen’s herd to seven cows. Despite the additional mouths to feed, he remains unconcerned. He views the calves as a valuable investment, as a year-old Aberdeen Angus bull can be worth several thousand dollars. “Oh yes, four at a time — it is a windfall,” Knelsen remarked, recognizing the financial potential of the unexpected addition to his farm.
The story of these quadruplet calves serves as a reminder of the surprises that nature can present. As Knelsen continues to care for his livestock, he remains grateful for this rare and joyful occurrence, marking a unique chapter in his farming experience.
