Expert Tips for Homeowners: Pest Control, Water Safety, and Renovation
Homeowners often face challenges when it comes to managing pests, ensuring water safety, and undertaking renovations. Experts provide practical advice on how to effectively handle these issues, emphasizing methods that are both humane and effective.
Dealing with Squirrels in Your Home
One of the most common complaints among homeowners is the presence of squirrels in attic spaces or floor framing. A pest control expert recently addressed this issue, highlighting the need to eliminate the squirrels and seal any entry points. While some may consider using poison traps, this approach is not advisable due to potential risks to other wildlife and pets.
Instead, homeowners can opt for more humane solutions. Squirrels typically leave their nests during the day, especially in warmer weather, making it possible to use live traps for relocation. Observing their habits can help identify entry points, which are often located around the eaves where the roof meets exterior walls.
To close these entry points effectively, experts recommend using woven copper mesh. This material is not only durable but also difficult for squirrels and other small rodents to chew through. It is commonly available and can be used in various applications around the home.
Ensuring Safe Water Supply
For those living in rural areas, the safety of drinking water is paramount, particularly for households with young children. Installing a Ultraviolet (UV) water sterilizer in your water well system is a proactive measure that can enhance safety. According to experts, UV sterilization is a reliable method that exposes water to high-intensity UV light, effectively eliminating harmful microorganisms.
Although ground water is generally safe, contamination can occur from external sources. Investing in a UV system can mitigate these risks, especially since the ongoing costs are relatively low. The average annual expense for replacing the UV bulb ranges from $100 to $150, making it a reasonable precaution for families.
While many homeowners in rural areas may not have UV systems in place, maintaining one can provide peace of mind. It is essential to ensure that the system is well-maintained, as ineffective systems may not offer the intended protection.
Renovation Best Practices
When preparing for home renovations, such as installing new flooring, homeowners often wonder about the sequence of tasks. Experts recommend painting walls before laying down new flooring. This approach allows for easier application without the concern of damaging the new floor.
Today’s rigid floating floors are popular for their aesthetic appeal and straightforward installation. However, they require a very flat subfloor to avoid issues such as flexing or noise during use. If the subfloor deviates by more than a quarter-inch over a 10-foot span, the flooring may not perform as intended.
For older homes with uneven floors, flexible flooring options like luxury vinyl plank or tile may be more suitable. These materials can adapt to slight imperfections, providing a more stable and satisfying finish for homeowners.
In summary, addressing common household issues requires a combination of effective strategies and preventative measures. Whether it’s managing pests, safeguarding water quality, or planning renovations, informed decisions can lead to a safer and more comfortable living environment.
