Residents of Fort Macleod, Alberta, requiring emergency medical care will need to seek assistance elsewhere following the temporary closure of the emergency department at the Fort Macleod Health Centre. The department closed at 7:00 a.m. on September 3, 2023, due to an unexpected shortage of clinical personnel. It is scheduled to reopen later the same day at 7:00 p.m.

During this closure, individuals in need of emergency services are advised to call 9-1-1. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) will redirect calls to the Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge, located approximately 49 kilometres away. In addition to Chinook Regional Hospital, residents can also access emergency care at the Pincher Creek Health Centre, Cardston Health Centre, or Claresholm Community Health Centre.

For non-urgent health inquiries, the public can reach out to Health Link at 8-1-1 for assistance at any time. Officials from Alberta Health Services (AHS) have assured the community that nursing staff will remain on-site at the Fort Macleod Health Centre to provide care for long-term care residents during this period.

This temporary closure underscores the ongoing challenges many healthcare facilities face in maintaining adequate staffing levels. AHS continues to monitor the situation closely, aiming to resume full emergency services as soon as possible.
