Dr. Jodie Stewart Honored for Leadership in Algoma Primary Care
Dr. Jodie Stewart, a prominent family physician in Sault Ste. Marie, has been recognized for her exceptional leadership and advocacy in the field of primary care. The Ontario College of Family Physicians (OCFP) awarded her the prestigious Award of Excellence during a virtual ceremony held on October 25, 2023. This recognition highlights her commitment to improving healthcare access and quality in the Algoma region.
During the ceremony, Dr. Stewart, who serves as the CEO and board chair of the Algoma District Medical Group, dedicated the award to her fellow primary care providers. “They all have the same goal – to provide excellent care to our community so that our community can thrive,” she stated. Her words reflected a collective effort, emphasizing that the award represents the dedication of many healthcare professionals working tirelessly on the front lines.
Advancing Access to Care
In her role as chair of the Primary Care Network for the Algoma Ontario Health Team, Dr. Stewart plays a pivotal part in enhancing patient access to healthcare services. She collaborates with various primary care organizations in the region to ensure that more patients can connect with healthcare providers.
One of her significant achievements includes the announcement that the Group Health Centre aims to re-rostering 8,000 patients by December 2023, with a long-term goal of reaching 14,000 patients by 2027. Dr. Stewart noted that they have submitted funding proposals to expand family health teams, which will enable primary care providers to operate “at the top of their scope.” This initiative is crucial for managing the healthcare needs of the growing population.
Enhancing Newborn Care
Dr. Stewart’s commitment to healthcare extends beyond adult patients. She has also focused on improving newborn care in the region. The OCFP recognized her collaborative work with the Sault Area Hospital to ensure that all newborns receive comprehensive care from birth through adulthood.
“This initiative came about several years ago when we faced capacity issues in primary care,” she explained. “We identified that newborns are particularly vulnerable to not having immediate primary care upon discharge from the hospital.”
Dr. Stewart led a collaborative effort with pediatricians and hospital staff to develop processes that facilitate smooth transitions for newborns into community care. This initiative aims to guarantee that these infants receive the necessary support to remain safe and healthy as they grow.
Dr. Jodie Stewart’s recent accolade serves as a testament to her unwavering dedication to healthcare in the Algoma region. Her leadership not only impacts individual patients but also strengthens the overall healthcare system, ensuring that communities thrive through accessible and quality care.
