Counterfeit Viagra Seized in Toronto Store by Health Canada
Health Canada has announced the seizure of counterfeit Viagra sold at a Toronto convenience store. The fake 100 mg tablets were found at Rocky Convenience, located on St. Clair Avenue West, near Runnymede Road. The federal agency confirmed that the manufacturer of Viagra verified the product’s counterfeit status.
The seized medication raises significant health concerns. Health Canada indicated that it is uncertain whether the counterfeit product contains any active drug. Since it has not undergone assessment for efficacy or quality, the counterfeit tablets could potentially have higher dosages than indicated or include “dangerous contaminants and hidden ingredients.” The label on the counterfeit product claims to contain the prescription drug sildenafil, which should only be administered under the supervision of a healthcare professional.
Using counterfeit Viagra poses serious health risks, including an increased likelihood of heart attack, stroke, chest pain, high blood pressure, and abnormal heartbeat. Health Canada strongly advises anyone who purchased the product from Rocky Convenience to “immediately stop using” it and safely dispose of it. Additionally, individuals should consult a healthcare professional if they experience any health issues after use.
To ensure the authenticity of prescription medications, Health Canada recommends purchasing them exclusively from licensed pharmacies, accompanied by a prescription from a healthcare provider. The agency emphasized that prescription drugs should only be dispensed in licensed pharmacies and taken under the care of a healthcare professional due to the risks of serious side effects associated with these medications.
In light of this incident, Health Canada continues to monitor the situation closely and encourages the public to report any suspected counterfeit medications. The agency’s proactive measures underscore the importance of consumer safety and the need for vigilance when it comes to purchasing pharmaceuticals.
