Construction Begins on $311 Million Cancer Centre in Nanaimo

The construction of a new cancer centre at **Nanaimo Regional General Hospital** has officially commenced. On **October 31, 2023**, British Columbia government ministers gathered at the hospital to mark the groundbreaking of this significant project, which is budgeted at **$311 million**. The initiative was first announced last year, and site work began earlier this year.

Investment in Local Healthcare

The new facility will span three storeys and is expected to open its doors in **2028**. It will provide a range of cancer treatments, including radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Additionally, the centre will be equipped with advanced imaging technologies such as **CT** and **PET/CT** scanners, an oncology ambulatory care unit, and an oncology pharmacy, among other vital health services.

**Bowinn Ma**, British Columbia’s Minister of Infrastructure, emphasized the transformative impact this centre will have on cancer care for residents of central Vancouver Island. “This facility is a generational investment in health care for the central Island,” she said in a news release. “It will deliver better care for cancer patients for many years to come by providing vital services closer to home, so patients won’t have to travel long distances for treatment.”

Collaborative Efforts for Enhanced Care

The operation of the new centre will be a collaborative effort between **B.C. Cancer**, **Island Health**, and will be funded through contributions from the province, the **Nanaimo Regional Hospital District**, and the **B.C. Cancer Foundation**.

**Josie Osborne**, the Minister of Health, shared her insights on the significance of this initiative. “By bringing advanced, integrated cancer treatment closer to home, we are not only improving access for patients and families, but also supporting them through some of the most challenging moments of their lives,” she stated.

The development of this cancer centre underscores the commitment of the British Columbia government to enhance healthcare services in the region, ensuring residents have access to essential medical resources without the need for extensive travel. As construction progresses, the community looks forward to the benefits this facility will bring, creating a lasting impact on cancer treatment in Nanaimo and beyond.
