A significant donation of $1 million has been made to the Bringing Hearts Home campaign, aimed at improving cardiac healthcare services in Lethbridge, Alberta. This generous contribution comes from Chris Murray, the owner of Murray Auto Group, which has a long history in the car business spanning a century.

Murray’s donation coincides with the 100th anniversary of his family-owned dealership group, which operates 30 dealerships across western Canada. “We’ve always believed in giving back to the community, and with this being our 100th anniversary, it was a chance to give a larger, well, much larger than normal, contribution back to the community,” Murray stated.

The Bringing Hearts Home campaign has gained considerable momentum, raising approximately $26 million toward its $30 million goal within the last 18 months. Murray expressed confidence in the community’s spirit, noting, “I have always known Lethbridge to be a generous community, so I was not surprised to see the campaign get the support it has.”

Transformative Impact on Local Healthcare

The announcement of the donation was made near the Chinkook Regional Hospital, where the future Cardiac Centre of Excellence will be constructed. Dr. Sayeh Zielke, a local cardiologist and one of the campaign’s leaders, conveyed her excitement about the project’s progress. “When we started dreaming and planning for this campaign, we were told $30 million was incredibly ambitious, especially in the timeline that we had. This is beyond our wildest expectations,” Zielke remarked.

Dr. Zielke highlighted the pressing need for enhanced cardiac healthcare, as heart disease remains the leading cause of death in southern Alberta. The region has a mortality rate from heart disease that is approximately 30 percent higher than the provincial average. She noted the current use of the hospital space as a storage area rather than a facility for patient care, stating, “It makes me sad every time I come and see it being used as a kind of large storage locker, rather than providing care to those who need it.”

The completion of the Cardiac Centre of Excellence will allow for life-saving cardiac care to be delivered closer to home, thereby improving patient outcomes and reducing travel burdens for families. While large donations like Murray’s are invaluable, Dr. Zielke emphasized that all contributions, regardless of size, bring them closer to their goal. “Whether that means making a two-figure donation as opposed to seven, or volunteering for any of the community events that support this cause,” she added.

Community Engagement and Future Fundraising Efforts

Support for the Bringing Hearts Home campaign continues to grow, with various initiatives planned in the coming months. For instance, Pattison Media’s B93.3 FM and WILD 95.5 FM are set to participate in the 16th Annual Care from the Heart Radio-a-Thon on February 12, further mobilizing community support for the cause.

As the campaign approaches its fundraising target, the focus remains on creating a facility that ensures comprehensive cardiac care is available to all residents of southern Alberta, ultimately saving lives and enhancing the health of the community.
