Children’s Autism Services Hosts Two Inclusive Holiday Events
On December 9, 2023, in Edmonton, Children’s Autism Services organized two distinct holiday parties designed specifically for neurodiverse children. This initiative aimed to address the varying sensory needs of autistic children during the festive season by providing tailored environments for both sensory-sensitive and sensory-seeking individuals.
Executive Director Terri Duncan emphasized the importance of offering choices to families. “It’s about options, and creating a safe and welcoming environment,” she stated. The organization set up one party with a focus on lower sensory input, featuring dimmed lights, a quiet atmosphere, and a controlled space for children to take pictures with Santa Claus.
In contrast, the second party offered a vibrant setting filled with music, a bouncy castle, and various stimulating activities. “Some kids do well with lots of stimulation and sensory input, and some don’t. So we want to provide options,” Duncan added. This thoughtful approach aimed to ensure that all children could engage with the holiday spirit in a manner that suited their individual needs.
The decision to host two parties in adjacent rooms was also intended to alleviate stress for parents. A media release from Children’s Autism Services highlighted that holiday festivities can present significant challenges for autistic children, often in different ways. By creating these tailored environments, the organization sought to make the holiday season more enjoyable for families.
One parent, Monique Catibog, expressed her appreciation for the initiative. Her son is a sensory-seeker, and she brought him to the more stimulating party, knowing it would be an enjoyable experience for him. “It means so much to us, being here with my kid,” she conveyed, reflecting the sentiment of many families who participated in the events.
Children’s Autism Services continues to play a vital role in supporting neurodiverse children and their families in Edmonton. By fostering an inclusive environment, the organization not only celebrates the holiday season but also acknowledges the diverse needs of its community.
