The Chatham Skin Clinic is implementing significant changes to its infection control protocols following a recent evaluation by Chatham-Kent Public Health. The health unit identified lapses in the sterilization and reprocessing of medical equipment at the clinic, located at 125 Keil Dr. S., occurring between October 1, 2024, and January 30, 2025.

According to a public statement from the health unit, these lapses could potentially expose patients to blood-borne illnesses, including HIV and hepatitis. Patients who received treatments during this timeframe, which included skin biopsies and cosmetic procedures, are advised to consult their healthcare providers to assess their risk for these infections. For those without a healthcare provider, the health unit recommends visiting a walk-in clinic for evaluation.

In a letter addressed to patients, Queenette Asuquo, a physician at the clinic, reassured the community by stating, “No patient infections associated with clinic procedures have been identified.” This declaration came in light of the health unit’s review, which focused on the clinic’s infection prevention and control practices.

Asuquo emphasized that the feedback from the health unit primarily highlighted areas for improvement in process measures and documentation related to sterilization. To address these concerns, the clinic is collaborating closely with public health officials. They have instituted enhanced documentation systems, updated workflow safeguards, and strengthened monitoring procedures.

In addition, the Chatham Skin Clinic has begun using single-use sterile packs and pre-packaged procedure kits, aligning with public health recommendations. These measures aim to ensure the safety and confidence of patients receiving care at the facility.
