CGH Medical Center is set to launch a new Basic Nurse Assistant Training Program, approved by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH). This initiative aims to enhance access to healthcare careers for aspiring professionals. The program will provide participants with full-time paid employment while they undergo training necessary to deliver safe and compassionate patient care.

Over the course of seven weeks, participants will work three 12-hour shifts each week. This structure allows them to earn a paycheck while fulfilling the classroom, lab, and clinical training requirements. The curriculum covers all 21 essential skills outlined by the IDPH Model Curriculum, ensuring that students are well-prepared for the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) exam.

Program Details and Structure

Classes will be conducted on-site at CGH Medical Center, utilizing dedicated classrooms and labs, with clinical experiences arranged in the medical and surgical departments. Textbooks and practice materials will be provided to participants, along with built-in study sessions during their work shifts.

Upon successful completion of the course and passing the CNA exam, participants will have the opportunity to transition into permanent CNA positions at CGH. The inaugural class is anticipated to commence in late March 2024, with plans to offer up to two classes annually depending on workforce requirements.

This program addresses a significant gap for working adults who struggle to balance full-time employment with traditional CNA coursework. By integrating paid employment with training, CGH Medical Center is supporting community members in their pursuit of meaningful careers in healthcare while meeting the increasing demand for skilled and compassionate CNAs.

Eligibility and Application Process

Applicants must adhere to specific guidelines set by both IDPH and CGH Medical Center. Requirements include being at least 18 years of age, holding a high school diploma or GED, passing a background check, and meeting vaccination standards.
