The first baby of 2026 in the Kootenay Boundary region was born early Friday morning at Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital in Trail, British Columbia. Gursanth Kaur Brar made her entrance at 5:36 a.m., weighing seven pounds, 15 ounces. She is the daughter of Sandeep Brar and his partner Gurjeet Brar, who reside in Castlegar.

Hospital staff proudly acknowledged this birth as the first of the year at their facility. While Gursanth Kaur’s arrival marked a joyful moment for her family, she was not the province’s first newborn of 2026. That title went to a baby born shortly after midnight at Kelowna General Hospital. This baby arrived at 12:18 a.m. and weighed six pounds, eight ounces, according to official reports from the province.

Significance of the Births in British Columbia

This event holds particular significance as it marks the second consecutive year that British Columbia’s first baby has been born within the Interior Health Authority. In 2025, the honor went to a newborn delivered at Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops. The trend highlights a growing pattern in the region’s maternity services, showcasing the importance of local hospitals in welcoming new lives into the community.

Both families celebrated these milestones with joy, as the arrival of a new baby not only signifies hope and renewal but also fosters a sense of community. The timing of these births as the new year begins adds an extra layer of excitement, as families across the province reflect on their hopes and aspirations for the year ahead.

As the community in Castlegar rejoices in the arrival of Gursanth Kaur Brar, many will no doubt look forward to witnessing her growth and the cherished memories that will follow. The experience serves as a reminder of the new beginnings that each year brings, filled with potential and promise.
