The annual Carve 4 Cancer fundraiser has successfully raised over $16,100 for the Windsor Regional Cancer Program. This initiative encourages local businesses to sponsor the creation of large, intricately carved pumpkins, which are then displayed for public viewing and voting. The event, which showcases community spirit and creativity, culminated in a significant contribution to cancer support services in the region.

Founded in 2018 by Lindsey Bareich, the Carve 4 Cancer event has evolved remarkably since its inception. Bareich, who started the project at the age of 12, expressed pride in its growth and impact. “I started this when I was 12, and I actually can’t believe how far we’ve come,” she stated. “Going into boardrooms was super scary, doing a one-minute elevator pitch, and making these brochures. It was a crazy experience then, and I can’t believe how far we’ve come.”

Throughout the last week of October, local businesses and their teams carved pumpkins, with sizes reaching up to 80 lbs. The carved masterpieces were judged by patients and staff at the cancer center, who cast their votes using paper ballots, while the public participated through online voting on Facebook. In total, Carve 4 Cancer has raised $93,408 over its eight-year history.

Creative Contributions and Awards

This year, a Cinderella-themed pumpkin carriage submitted by the staff at Shock Pros Motorsports in South Woodslee took home both the Online Voting Award and the In-Person Voting Award. Owner Garett Hendy shared insights into their creative process, explaining that it took a week to gather materials for the carving, with team members sourcing items from thrift stores and their homes. “The tricky part was it took us a week to gather all the bits and pieces for it. We didn’t want to spend a lot of money on it either,” Hendy remarked. He noted that a Barbie doll featured in the design belonged to an employee’s daughter, highlighting the community-driven aspect of the event.

In addition to the awards for public voting, a pumpkin carved by Centerline won the Judges’ Choice category, showcasing the talent and creativity of the participants. Meanwhile, the Orange Ballers, representing the 2009 Caboto Girls Soccer Team, earned the title of Highest Fundraiser, demonstrating the competitive spirit behind the event.

Carve 4 Cancer not only brings together local businesses and community members but also plays a crucial role in supporting patients and families affected by cancer. As this year’s event wraps up, the organizers and participants look forward to continuing this impactful tradition in the years to come.
