Bow Island Health Centre Expands Emergency Hours for Community Care
The emergency department at the Bow Island Health Centre in Alberta is extending its operational hours to better serve the community. Starting immediately, the department will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays, and from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Fridays through Sundays. This change aims to enhance access to emergency care despite ongoing staffing challenges.
According to Alberta Health Services (AHS), the health centre is currently facing a clinical personnel shortage, which affects its ability to provide regular 24-hour coverage seven days a week. AHS expressed gratitude to local physicians for their commitment to extend coverage, enabling emergency services alongside regular clinic operations.
During the new hours, physicians will be present at the emergency department from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and again from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on weekdays, catering to emergent patients and low-acuity walk-ins. For patients arriving between 11:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., physicians will remain on-call to offer necessary assistance. When the department is closed, nursing staff will continue to provide care for acute care patients and long-term care residents.
AHS is actively recruiting for additional positions within the community and is dedicated to ensuring that local residents retain access to essential healthcare services. Residents are advised to contact 911 for medical emergencies. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) are fully prepared to respond to urgent situations and facilitate inter-facility transfers to nearby hospitals.
For patients seeking alternative care, the Taber Health Centre and Medicine Hat Regional Hospital are available options, both located approximately 57 km from Bow Island. Residents are also encouraged to reach out to Health Link at 811, which operates 24/7 for non-emergency health-related inquiries. Individuals requiring non-emergency medical care should contact their family physician for further assistance.
As AHS works to address staffing challenges, the expanded hours at the Bow Island Health Centre reflect a commitment to enhancing healthcare access in the region, ensuring that residents receive timely and appropriate medical attention.
