Beetroot Juice Cuts Blood Pressure in Older Adults, Study Finds

High blood pressure remains a leading health issue among older adults, often resulting in severe complications such as heart attacks and strokes. A recent study conducted by the University of Exeter has highlighted the potential of beetroot juice as a natural alternative to traditional medication. Researchers found that consuming concentrated beetroot juice twice a day for just two weeks significantly reduced blood pressure levels in participants aged 60 to 70.
The findings suggest that the benefits of beetroot go beyond its nutrient content. The vegetable appears to positively influence the oral microbiome — the community of bacteria residing in the mouth. Beetroots are rich in dietary nitrate, which the body converts into nitric oxide. This compound is crucial for vascular health, as it helps blood vessels relax and expand, promoting healthy circulation. As individuals age, the body produces less nitric oxide, contributing to a higher susceptibility to hypertension.
In the study, older adults who consumed nitrate-rich beetroot juice experienced a notable change in their oral bacteria. Research indicated a decrease in harmful bacteria and an increase in beneficial strains, which enhanced the body’s ability to generate nitric oxide. As a result, participants observed measurable reductions in blood pressure, an effect not replicated in younger participants in the study.
Health Benefits of Beetroot and Alternatives
For those who may not enjoy the earthy taste of beetroot, other vegetables such as spinach, rocket (arugula), fennel, celery, and kale also offer high levels of dietary nitrate and may provide similar cardiovascular benefits. Nevertheless, beetroot remains a straightforward and effective option for those seeking to improve their heart health through dietary changes.
It is important to note that while beetroot juice is generally safe for most individuals, it can cause a temporary pinkish-red discoloration of urine or stools, a phenomenon known as beeturia. Those with specific health conditions, such as kidney stones, should consult their healthcare provider before significantly increasing their consumption of beets or beet juice.
For individuals interested in incorporating this heart-healthy habit into their diets, a simple recipe is available.
Ingredients:
– Fresh beetroot
– Water (optional)
Instructions:
1. Wash and peel the beetroot.
2. Cut into small pieces and blend with a little water if desired.
3. Strain the mixture to extract the juice.
Tip: For optimal results, consume one small glass (approximately 150–200 ml) once or twice daily, as demonstrated in the study.
Embracing beetroot juice may offer a simple yet effective method for managing blood pressure in older adults, providing a natural complement to traditional treatments.
