B.C. Launches COVID-19 and Flu Vaccination Campaign for 2023

As the respiratory illness season approaches, British Columbia is set to begin its annual vaccination campaign for both COVID-19 and influenza. Notifications for vaccine appointments started being sent to residents on October 7, 2023, with appointments available from October 14, 2023. This initiative aims to prioritize individuals at the highest risk of severe illness, providing access to both vaccines free of charge for anyone aged six months and older.
The province will offer the updated LP.8.1 Moderna (Spikevax) and Pfizer (Comirnaty) vaccines this fall, which are designed to enhance protection against current variants of COVID-19. Residents have the option to receive the flu and COVID-19 vaccines either separately or at the same time, allowing for greater convenience during the vaccination process.
Targeting High-Risk Groups
British Columbia’s health officials emphasize the importance of vaccination as the most effective means of protection against respiratory illnesses. Those particularly encouraged to get vaccinated include seniors, people who are immunocompromised, individuals living in long-term care facilities, pregnant individuals, Indigenous populations, and those with chronic illnesses or underlying health conditions.
For influenza, children under five years old are also classified as high-risk. The health ministry reiterated the community benefits of vaccination, stating, “Vaccination not only helps protect individuals, but also their families, neighbours, and co-workers.” This effort aims to reduce the risk of severe illness, thereby contributing to overall community health during the respiratory illness season.
Appointment Booking Process
British Columbians can book their vaccination appointments through several channels. Those registered in the Get Vaccinated system can use the emailed booking link they received. Alternatively, they can call the Get Vaccinated phone line at 1-833-838-2323 or inquire at local pharmacies for availability.
As the province gears up for this vaccination campaign, residents are reminded that staying updated with vaccinations not only helps protect themselves but also supports the health of the wider community. The ongoing commitment to vaccination is a critical step in managing public health effectively during this season of increased respiratory illnesses.
