When the Artemis II Mission launches, faculty and students at Western University will closely monitor the event, particularly those involved in future space missions. Among them is PhD candidate Jack Hostrawer, who expressed his enthusiasm: “My excitement level is through the roof and spilling out of my ears! It’s amazing!” Hostrawer plays a small role in the wider Artemis team, contributing to this significant milestone in space exploration.

Hostrawer and fellow students plan to watch the launch from London, Ontario, while another Western scientist will witness the event from a privileged position. Dr. Gordon Osinski is part of the science team preparing for the Artemis III mission, which aims to land astronauts on the moon and return with samples. He stated, “We will have a new batch of samples from somewhere on the moon we’ve never been to before, either with robots or humans.”

The Artemis II Mission, scheduled for November 2024, is pivotal as it precedes the more ambitious Artemis III. As Osinski noted, “Everything’s beginning to feel a lot more real now with Jeremy Hansen, somebody I know very well. I mean, he is about to be strapped to the top of the rocket and head off to the moon.”

This upcoming launch marks a generational shift in space exploration, with many under 60 having never experienced such an event. Osinski hopes the Artemis II Mission will inspire a renewed era of excitement and collaboration in space exploration. He remarked, “I really do hope that Artemis II is going to elevate the profile of space in Canada and around the world.”

Hostrawer also emphasized the broader implications of this mission, saying, “This is going to open up decades worth of new science projects for new students to discover new things. We are not just here for Artemis II; we are here for the story that is just about to begin.”

With both students and faculty eagerly anticipating the launch, Western University is positioned at the forefront of a new chapter in space exploration. This mission not only signifies a remarkable achievement for NASA but also inspires future generations of scientists and explorers. As excitement builds, the world watches closely, ready to witness the next steps in humanity’s journey to the moon and beyond.
