The University of Waterloo (UW) has officially commenced the search for its next president, following the announcement from current leader Vivek Goel that he will not seek a second term. Goel, who has been at the helm since June 2021, is set to conclude his presidency on June 30, 2026. His decision to step down has prompted the university to initiate the process of identifying a suitable successor.

Goel, who previously held various senior roles at the University of Toronto and served as CEO of Public Health Ontario from 2008 to 2014, has played a significant role in shaping UW’s strategic direction during his tenure. The search for a new president is critical as the university seeks to maintain its status as a leading institution in higher education.

In response to this transition, Murray Gamble, a member of the board, has been instrumental in establishing a presidential nominating committee. This committee comprises a diverse group of stakeholders, including board members, alumni, faculty, staff, senate representatives, and students. The inclusion of the university community in the selection process underscores the importance of collaboration in identifying the right candidate.

Community engagement has already begun. In May, local residents were invited to share their input through a questionnaire aimed at gathering insights on the desired qualifications and characteristics for the new president. This feedback will help inform the committee’s decision-making process.

Before the committee reviews potential candidates, the recruitment firm Laverne Smith & Associates Inc. will conduct an initial search. The firm highlighted that the successful candidate will be expected to enhance the university’s performance as a premier institution dedicated to advancing knowledge through teaching, research, and scholarship. The emphasis on a commitment to free expression and inquiry reflects the university’s core values.

Once the recruitment firm presents a shortlist of candidates, the presidential nominating committee will evaluate each individual and work toward a final decision. This thorough vetting process aims to ensure that UW appoints a president who can effectively lead the institution into its next chapter.

As the University of Waterloo navigates this significant leadership change, the search for a new president represents an opportunity to build on the foundation laid by Goel and continue fostering an environment of academic excellence. The coming months will be crucial as the university community comes together to support this important transition.
