University of Illinois Extension Unveils Soil Archive at Granville Library
The Putnam County Public Library District will host a presentation by the University of Illinois Extension on the state’s Centennial Soil Archive on March 12, 2024, at 18:00. This event will take place at the Granville branch, located at 214 S. McCoy St.. The program aims to explore the evolution of Illinois soil over the last century, utilizing data gathered from the first soil surveys conducted in the state, which began in 1899.
During these initial surveys, researchers collected soil samples from various fields down to depths of three feet. These samples were subsequently stored at the University of Illinois‘s Urbana-Champaign campus. The archived samples serve as a crucial resource for scientists studying the effects of agricultural practices and climate change on soil health and composition.
Understanding Soil Changes and Community Involvement
The presentation will not only highlight the historical significance of the soil samples but will also discuss current resampling efforts being undertaken across Illinois. Attendees will learn how they can engage with these initiatives and contribute to ongoing research.
This informative program is offered free of charge and is open to the public. Those interested in learning more about soil science and its implications for agriculture and environmental health are encouraged to attend. For additional information, interested individuals can contact the library at 815-339-2038 or visit the library’s website at sites.google.com/putnamcountylibrary.org/america250/home.
The event promises to provide valuable insights into the vital role soil plays in both local ecosystems and broader environmental issues, aligning with the University of Illinois Extension’s commitment to community education and engagement.
