Third-Grader Churchill Ogbegun Wins $100,000 Math Scholarship
A third-grade student from Boulder Hill Elementary School, Churchill Ogbegun, has been awarded a remarkable scholarship valued at over $100,000. This scholarship, part of the National Math Stars program, is designed to support gifted mathematics students over a ten-year period, providing them with extensive academic resources and opportunities.
Ogbegun was chosen as a member of the program’s 2025 cohort, which recognizes standout math students across seven states. According to a release from the Oswego School District 308, he was selected from thousands of nominees. His selection criteria included his “academic excellence, passion for mathematics, and recommendations from school leaders.”
As part of this scholarship, Ogbegun will benefit from weekly math mentoring, access to advanced math learning and STEM opportunities, and invitations to various math competitions and summer camps. Importantly, this support will extend from third grade through high school, with no financial burden placed on his family.
Boulder Hill Elementary Principal Pete Meismer expressed pride in Ogbegun’s achievement. In the release, he stated, “This accomplishment is a true reflection of his hard work and curiosity. Opportunities like this inspire a love for learning and create pathways for future success in STEM and beyond.”
The National Math Stars program aims to nurture the mathematical talent of exceptional students who may face barriers to advanced learning. For more information about the program, interested parties can visit nationalmathstars.org.
Boulder Hill Elementary School is situated in Boulder Hill, south of Montgomery, in Kendall County, and is part of the Oswego School District 308. This recognition serves not only as a personal achievement for Ogbegun but also highlights the importance of supporting gifted students in their educational journeys.
