The St. Mary River Irrigation District (SMRID) has awarded a total of $30,000 in scholarships to 15 students pursuing agriculture-related post-secondary education for the 2025-26 school year. Each recipient will receive $2,000 through the annual scholarship program, which honors the memory of former community leaders Peter Langemann, Keith Francis, and Jonnie Popel. The scholarships are available to students from across the district, which encompasses regions such as Cypress County, Lethbridge County, Coaldale, Bow Island, and the MD of Taber.

Supporting Future Agricultural Leaders

SMRID chairman Cory Nelson expressed pride in the board’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of agricultural leaders in southern Alberta. “All 15 of this year’s recipients are studying in an agriculture-related field,” Nelson stated. “This funding is an investment in the future leaders of the agriculture and irrigation industries in southern Alberta.” The recipients are enrolled in various programs, including crop research, veterinary medicine, agronomy, and agribusiness.

Among the scholarship recipients is Allison Baptista, who shared her educational journey. “I had already started a biochemistry degree before I fell in love with agronomy,” she explained. “The SMRID scholarship gives me the opportunity to finish this degree before taking the next step into graduate studies and agriculture research. It allows me to build a firm scientific base to understand the biochemical pathways that are essential to explain the results we see in the field.”

SMRID general manager David Westwood highlighted the importance of investing in students pursuing careers in agriculture. “These students represent the next generation of innovators, producers, and leaders who will help ensure that agriculture in southern Alberta continues to thrive,” Westwood noted. “We’re proud to support their education and their commitment to advancing the sector.”

Record Applications Reflect Growing Interest

This year, SMRID received a record number of applications, showcasing the increasing interest in agricultural studies among students in the region. The irrigation district plays a critical role in southern Alberta’s agricultural success by capturing snowmelt water through a network of pipelines, canals, and reservoirs. This water is delivered to farms across the southern Alberta plains, extending from Lethbridge to Medicine Hat.

The region benefits from consistent yields of high-value crops, which are less susceptible to disease compared to areas with wetter and more humid climates. This agricultural environment has attracted large processing companies, contributing to the development of the region as a significant food corridor.

By supporting educational initiatives like the scholarship program, SMRID aims to foster a strong agricultural community, ensuring that future generations are equipped to face the challenges and opportunities in the industry.
