Somonauk Library Launches Exciting Winter Reading Challenge for Kids
The Somonauk Public Library is inviting children to embark on a winter reading adventure starting on January 2, 2024. The library’s winter reading challenge encourages young readers to engage with books and enjoy various fun activities throughout January. Families can sign up at the front desk to participate in this exciting initiative.
In addition to the reading challenge, the library offers a variety of programs designed to entertain and educate children of different ages. One popular program, Tod Tales, is tailored for infants and toddlers up to age three. This weekly session introduces young ones to songs, rhymes, and hand motions, fostering early literacy skills. The program will take place every Wednesday at 11 a.m. on January 7, 14, 21, and 28, and registration is required.
Creative Activities and Reading Opportunities
For children aged three to six, the library will host Stories & Crafts for Little Ones on January 15 at 11 a.m. and January 20 at 4 p.m.. This program encourages creativity and storytelling through engaging crafts. Registration is also necessary for this activity.
On January 10, the library will offer an All Day Drop-In Craft for Kids for ages three and up. This event provides a warm environment for children to express their creativity while escaping the winter chill.
Another anticipated program is Paws For Reading, scheduled for January 22 at 4 p.m.. Children in grades one through five can read to trained Fox Valley Therapy Dogs during 15-minute sessions, promoting reading confidence in a relaxed setting. Registration is required for this unique experience.
The Chapter Club, aimed at children aged six to ten, will meet on January 26 at 6:30 p.m.. Participants will discuss a selected book and engage in a related activity. Interested families can pick up copies of the books at the front desk, with registration necessary to attend.

For older children, the library has planned a Family Movie Day on January 31 at 2 p.m. and Tween/Teen Take Home Book Boxes, available for ages ten to seventeen. These boxes will include two library books, a treat, and additional goodies, with limited spots available for registration. Boxes can be picked up between January 5 and January 10.
Teens and tweens can also participate in a Vision Board Workshop on January 5 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.. This creative session allows participants to visualize their goals for the new year, with all materials provided by the library.
Another engaging activity is the Cocoa and Crafts for Tweens/Teens event on January 19, where participants will create faux stained glass while enjoying hot chocolate and cookies. The library encourages early registration due to limited spots.
For those looking for a relaxing evening, the Tween/Teen Cozy Coloring Club will meet on January 29 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.. This event invites participants to bring their coziest attire for a night of coloring, music, and conversation, with all necessary supplies provided.
Lastly, the library will offer Tech Help with Steve Goodwin from January 7 to January 22, allowing individuals to sign up for a 20-minute session to improve their technology skills.
