Somonauk Library Launches Exciting Winter Reading Challenge for Kids
The Somonauk Public Library is kicking off January with a series of engaging activities for children, including a winter reading challenge that begins on January 2, 2024. This initiative aims to encourage young readers to embark on a fun literary adventure during the winter months. Interested participants can sign up at the library’s front desk.
In addition to the reading challenge, the library has organized several programs that cater to different age groups. One of the highlights is the Tot Tales program, designed for children up to age three. This weekly event introduces babies and toddlers to songs, rhymes, hand motions, and books, fostering an early love for reading. Sessions are scheduled for Wednesdays at 11 a.m. on January 7, 14, 21, and 28, with prior registration required.
Crafts, Reading, and Family Fun
For children aged three to six, the library will host Stories & Crafts for Little Ones at 11 a.m. on January 15 and 4 p.m. on January 20. This program combines storytelling with creative craft activities, and registration is necessary.
On January 10, the library will hold an All Day Drop-In Craft for Kids, welcoming children aged three and up to create crafts in the Children’s Programming Room. This event provides a cozy retreat from the cold winter weather.
Another key offering is the Paws For Reading program, where children in grades one through five can read to Fox Valley Therapy dogs in 15-minute sessions scheduled for January 22 at 4 p.m.. This unique activity not only promotes reading but also fosters a comforting environment for young readers. Registration is required for this event as well.
Creative Workshops and Special Events
The library will also host a Chapter Club for children aged six to ten. Participants can gather to discuss selected books and engage in related activities. Meetings are set for January 26 at 6:30 p.m., with registration necessary to secure a spot.
Families can enjoy a Family Movie Day on January 31 at 2 p.m., providing an opportunity for a cozy afternoon of entertainment.
For older children and teens, the library offers Tween/Teen Take Home Book Boxes. Aimed at those aged ten to seventeen, these boxes include up to two library books, a treat, and other goodies. Registration is required, and boxes can be picked up from January 5 to 10.
Additionally, a Vision Board Workshop will take place on January 5, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., allowing tweens and teens to set their intentions for the new year. All materials will be supplied, but participants are encouraged to bring personal images.
On January 19, the library will host a Cocoa and Crafts for Tweens/Teens event, featuring faux stained glass crafts along with hot chocolate and cookies. This cozy evening will also require advance registration.
Finally, the Tween/Teen Cozy Coloring Club invites participants to relax with coloring, music, and conversation on January 29 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.. All necessary supplies will be provided, but registration is needed.
For those needing assistance with technology, Tech Help with Steve Goodwin will be available from January 7 to 22, offering 20-minute sessions to help navigate various tech challenges.
Craft enthusiasts can join Cards with Karen on January 22 at 6 p.m., where participants will create handmade Valentine cards. All supplies will be provided for a nominal fee of $5, with registration required.
The Somonauk Public Library continues to provide valuable resources and enjoyable activities for children and families, making it a vibrant community hub this winter. For more information and to register for events, visit the library’s website or call 815-498-2440.
