Somonauk Library Launches Exciting Winter Reading Challenge for Kids
The Somonauk Public Library is gearing up for a vibrant winter season with a series of engaging programs for children throughout January. Kicking off with the highly anticipated **Kids Winter Reading Challenge**, families can sign up at the front desk starting on January 2, 2024. This initiative is designed to encourage kids to explore new books and enjoy reading during the colder months.
Programs for Young Readers
Among the library’s offerings is the **Tot Tales** program, aimed at children up to age three. This interactive session introduces babies and toddlers to songs, rhymes, and books, fostering early literacy skills. Sessions will be held weekly at 11 a.m. on January 7, January 14, January 21, and January 28. Registration is required to participate.
Another exciting option is **Stories & Crafts for Little Ones**, targeting ages three to six. This program will take place at 11 a.m. on January 15 and at 4 p.m. on January 20. Like the Tot Tales program, prior registration is necessary.
For those looking to unleash their creativity, the library will host an **All Day Drop-In Craft for Kids** on January 10. Children aged three and up can spend the day working on crafts in the Children’s Programming Room, providing a warm indoor activity away from the winter chill.
Unique Reading Experiences and Activities
The **Paws For Reading** initiative invites children in grades one through five to read aloud to Fox Valley Therapy dogs in 15-minute sessions. Scheduled for 4 p.m. on January 22, this program aims to boost confidence in young readers. As with other programs, registration is required to secure a spot.
Additionally, the library will host a **Chapter Club** for children aged six to ten, providing a space for kids to discuss a book and engage in a related activity. Meetings are set for 6:30 p.m. on January 26, with book copies available for pickup at the front desk.
Families can also enjoy a **Family Movie Day** at 2 p.m. on January 31, offering a cozy afternoon of entertainment.
For tweens and teens, the library has several exciting initiatives. Participants aged ten to seventeen can register for **Tween/Teen Take Home Book Boxes**, which include up to two library books, a treat, and other surprises. The pickup window is from January 5 to January 10, and registration is essential due to limited availability.
A **Vision Board Workshop** for tweens and teens is also scheduled for 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on January 5. Attendees will create vision boards for the new year, with all materials provided.
Another highlight is the **Cocoa and Crafts for Tweens/Teens: Faux Stained Glass** event, taking place from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on January 19. Participants can enjoy hot chocolate and cookies while creating crafts, but should register in advance as spots are limited.
Lastly, the **Tween/Teen Cozy Coloring Club** invites participants to relax and color while enjoying calming music and conversation. This event will occur from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on January 29, and registration is required.
For those needing assistance with technology, Steve Goodwin will offer **Tech Help** sessions from January 7 to January 22. Each session lasts 20 minutes, providing personalized support.
Additionally, on January 22 at 6 p.m., **Cards with Karen** will guide participants in making handmade Valentine cards, with all supplies included for a $5 fee. Registration is also required for this creative session.
The Somonauk Public Library continues to foster a love of reading and creativity among children and teens. With a variety of programs tailored to different age groups, there is something for everyone to enjoy this winter.
