Shawna Mozdzen Sworn in as New Ward 1 School Trustee
Shawna Mozdzen was officially sworn in as the new school trustee for Ward 1 during a special meeting of the Brandon School Division board of trustees on October 16, 2023. This marks a significant moment for the division as Mozdzen steps into her role, having secured a decisive victory in the recent byelection.
Ceremony Highlights Mozdzen’s Commitment
The swearing-in ceremony took place in the presence of fellow board members and community members, where Mozdzen raised her right hand to affirm her commitment to “faithfully perform her duties and uphold the trustee code of ethics.” The ceremony was conducted by Denis Labossiere, the secretary-treasurer, who oversaw the signing of necessary documents in accordance with the Public Schools Act.
Expressing her enthusiasm for the new role, Mozdzen stated, “I’d like to get started and just work as a board — bring everyone together at the same table and come to great decisions as a board.” Her eagerness to collaborate with fellow trustees highlights her focus on unity and effective decision-making.
Election Success and Future Goals
In the byelection, Mozdzen garnered 2,229 votes, which accounted for 56.7 percent of the total votes cast. She triumphed over six other candidates, including Henry Sieklicki, Laura Armitage, Michael Grantham, Bonnie-Lynn Mills, and Eren Oleson. The election saw a total of 3,929 votes cast, with 596 of those being from advance polls and sealed ballots.
Throughout her campaign, Mozdzen emphasized the creation of a supportive and inclusive school environment for both students and their families. She aims to ensure that her voice is heard, advocating for the needs and well-being of students and staff alike. “Just try to do everything that’s right for the students and staff,” she affirmed after the ceremony.
As she embarks on this new chapter, the community anticipates her contributions to the Brandon School Division and looks forward to the positive changes she aims to implement.
