Senior Gavin Staats Named January Student of the Month at Sterling High

Gavin Staats, a senior at Sterling High School, has been recognized as the Student of the Month for January 2024. This honor highlights his academic achievements and involvement in extracurricular activities during his final year of high school.

Academic Engagement and Enthusiasm

The son of Michael and Rebecca Staats, Gavin has demonstrated a keen interest in his studies, particularly in Ms. Irvin’s Crop Science class. He describes this course as particularly engaging, noting how Ms. Irvin, despite being a first-year teacher, effectively made the subject come alive. “One day we would be looking at plant cells under a microscope and the next day we were out at our local plot taking soil samples and looking at the ears and leaves of the corn plants,” he shared.

Gavin’s enthusiasm for learning extends beyond the classroom. After graduating, he plans to enroll at Sauk Valley Community College to pursue studies in Electrical and HVAC Programs. This choice reflects his commitment to gaining practical skills that can lead to a successful career.

Extracurricular Involvement and Community Spirit

In addition to his academic pursuits, Gavin is active in sports, participating in both cross country and tennis. He values the friendships he has made through these activities and aims to serve as a positive influence on his teammates. “Being an upperclassman now, I enjoy being a positive influence and a great role model to my teammates,” he said.

One of the highlights of his high school experience occurred during his sophomore year when both the boys’ and girls’ cross country teams qualified for the state competition. “It was an amazing experience getting to be a part of that team and being able to experience this alongside some of my closest friends,” he recalled.

Gavin’s aspirations extend beyond academics and athletics. He hopes to continue growing as a person by helping others and remaining active in his church community. His vision for the future includes finding a challenging career that allows him to maintain a balance between work and personal interests.
