Twelve students from Saugeen District Senior School (SDSS) are set to represent their school at the Southern Ontario Model United Nations Assembly (SOMA) in Toronto. This opportunity is made possible through the generous support of the Port Elgin Rotary Club, the Southampton Rotary Club, and prize money recently earned at the Nuclear Innovation Institute (NII) Model UN competition.

The presentation of funds was made by Ken McCulloch from the Port Elgin Rotary Club and Dave Bertrand and MaryEllen Higgins of the Southampton Rotary Club. These contributions are crucial, as attending SOMA involves significant travel and accommodation expenses due to the distance from Saugeen Shores to Toronto.

Excelling in Preparation

SOMA is recognized as one of the province’s premier student conferences, providing participants with the chance to engage in high-level debate, diplomacy, and global problem-solving. During the conference, students represent different countries, collaborate to draft resolutions, and address complex international issues in a dynamic environment.

The SDSS delegation has already demonstrated exceptional skills and commitment, having recently secured first place at the NII Model UN conference. Their success highlights their preparation, critical thinking, and teamwork, which are vital for effective participation in such conferences.

Community Support for Future Leaders

Participation in SOMA would not have been feasible without the support from the community. The combined funding from the Port Elgin and Southampton Rotary Clubs, along with the prize money from the NII, enables these students to showcase their abilities on a provincial stage.

Model United Nations initiatives provide invaluable experiences in leadership development, public speaking, and global awareness—skills that extend far beyond the classroom. By engaging in this program, students gain insights into international relations and diplomacy, preparing them for future roles as informed global citizens.

SDSS expresses sincere gratitude to the Port Elgin Rotary Club, the Southampton Rotary Club, and the Nuclear Innovation Institute for their commitment to youth, education, and community leadership. The support of these organizations not only facilitates student participation but also fosters the development of future leaders within the community.
