Schools across the Waterloo Region were closed on January 22, 2024, as a significant snowfall impacted the area. The Waterloo Region District School Board and the Waterloo Catholic District School Board announced the closures late Sunday evening, citing adverse weather conditions. In addition, all school bus transportation was canceled, affecting many students.

Private and French language schools also joined the closures, along with several post-secondary institutions, including the University of Waterloo, Wilfrid Laurier University, Conestoga College, and the University of Guelph. These institutions made the decision following a winter storm that brought between 10 and 15 centimeters of snow to the region by Monday morning.

Weather Conditions and Impact

While the snowfall recorded was not the heaviest in the region’s history, it added to the challenges faced by snow clearing crews who have struggled to keep up with frequent snowfalls this season. By Sunday afternoon, reports indicated that 2 to 8 centimeters had already accumulated in various parts of the Waterloo Region.

In response to the ongoing weather conditions, Environment Canada issued a yellow snowfall warning, predicting additional snowfall in the coming days. Residents are advised to prepare for further winter weather, as heavy snow is expected to continue impacting travel and daily activities.

As conditions remain challenging, local authorities recommend that residents ensure they have adequate supplies, including shovels, to manage snow accumulation effectively. With another major snowfall anticipated, the community is urged to stay vigilant and prioritize safety while navigating the winter conditions.

For the latest updates on school closures and weather conditions, residents can check local news outlets and official school board websites.
