A significant upgrade is on the horizon for St. Basil Catholic School in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, as plans for a partial roof replacement have been approved. The renovation, which will affect the school’s 300 wing, is expected to cost approximately $1.3 million. Dave Coccimiglio, manager of plant services, provided this information during a recent report to the Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board.

The existing roof, which has been in place since 1994, will be replaced to ensure the safety and comfort of the more than 700 students enrolled at the school located on St. George’s Avenue East. This project is part of a broader strategy to enhance school facilities across the region.

Other Notable Capital Projects

While St. Basil’s roof replacement is a significant undertaking, it is not the only substantial investment planned for the coming year. The largest capital project is set to take place at Our Lady of Fatima in Elliot Lake, where site upgrades are estimated to cost $1.5 million. This project will include the construction of a new bus bay that will be shared with Conseil scolaire catholique Nouvelon, as well as improvements to the parking lot.

Our Lady of Fatima has undergone several upgrades in recent years, which have included the installation of LED lights to replace older fluorescent fixtures and various classroom renovations. These enhancements aim to create a more modern and efficient learning environment for students.

In addition to these projects, the Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board has outlined further improvements across several schools. At Holy Name of Jesus in Hornepayne, plans for $600,000 in upgrades include the installation of barrier-free access, new LED lighting, and classroom enhancements. Additionally, the school’s washrooms and exterior doors will also be targeted for improvement, with an audit planned to assess the exact scope of work needed.

At St. Mary’s in Blind River, the gym floor will be replaced at a cost of $70,000. Overall, the English Catholic board intends to allocate around $700,000 for general school requests and major maintenance expenditures across its facilities.

Coccimiglio noted that no further significant projects are forecast for the next few years, indicating that this round of improvements is critical for maintaining the quality of education and infrastructure within the district. These investments reflect the board’s commitment to providing safe and conducive learning environments for students in its schools.
