Sault College Launches Support Program for Algoma Steel Workers
Sault College has introduced a comprehensive program aimed at assisting individuals affected by the recent layoffs at Algoma Steel, which were announced on October 10, 2023. The initiative encompasses a variety of employment, academic, and personal supports tailored to help those impacted navigate their career transitions.
Interim President of Sault College, Sherri Smith, emphasized the institution’s commitment to the local community, stating, “Sault College is part of this community, and many of those impacted are our alumni, partners, friends, and neighbours.” The college aims to provide practical options for individuals seeking to retrain, upgrade their skills, and explore new career pathways.
Comprehensive Support for Affected Workers
The college’s program offers numerous resources for workers looking to advance their careers. These include academic upgrading and pathways for those needing to enhance or complete their credentials. Sault College provides a variety of certificate, diploma, degree, apprenticeship, and micro-credential programs that align with current and emerging labour market needs.
In addition to academic resources, Sault College is focused on delivering personalized support through its Student Services and Student Success teams. These teams are dedicated to helping learners succeed once they begin their studies, providing individualized guidance that addresses each person’s unique situation.
“Many programs are available in shorter, stackable formats,” President Smith noted. This flexibility allows individuals to retrain or pivot to new roles quickly while simultaneously working toward longer-term qualifications.
Next Steps for Those Affected
Individuals impacted by the Algoma Steel layoffs who wish to learn more about available programs and supports are encouraged to reach out directly to Sault College. Interested parties can contact the Student Services and Student Success teams via email at [email protected] or by phone at (705) 759-2554. Additional information regarding programs and supports can also be found on the college’s website at www.saultcollege.ca.
President Smith reinforced the college’s openness, stating, “Sault College is an open door and a safe space for all those affected by the Algoma Steel layoffs. We invite you to seek support, explore future opportunities, and perhaps even discover new passions you may not have previously considered.”
The college is actively collaborating with community partners to develop targeted programs as more information emerges regarding the upskilling and retraining needs of affected workers. Smith encouraged individuals to stay tuned for future updates as these pathways take shape, emphasizing the college’s commitment to standing alongside those in need during this transition.
As Sault College steps up to assist the community, it highlights the importance of adapting to economic changes and supporting those who may be facing uncertainty in their careers.
