Saugeen District Senior School (SDSS) will send a delegation of 12 students to participate in the Southern Ontario Model United Nations Assembly (SOMA) in Toronto, Ontario, in March 2024. This opportunity was made possible through the generous support of the Port Elgin Rotary Club, the Southampton Rotary Club, and prize money recently awarded at the Nuclear Innovation Institute (NII) competition.

The presentation of funds by representatives of both Rotary clubs, including Ken McCulloch of the Port Elgin Rotary and Dave Bertrand and MaryEllen Higgins of the Southampton Rotary, highlights the community’s commitment to youth engagement and education.

SOMA is recognized as one of the premier student conferences in Ontario, providing participants with the chance to engage in high-level debate, diplomacy, and global problem-solving. Students will represent various countries, collaborate in drafting resolutions, and address complex international issues in a stimulating environment.

The SDSS delegation has already showcased its capabilities by securing first place at the recent NII Model UN conference. This achievement underscores the students’ preparation, critical thinking, and teamwork, setting a strong foundation for their participation at SOMA.

Participation in this prestigious event, however, involves substantial costs due to the distance from Saugeen Shores to Toronto. Expenses related to long-distance travel, accommodation, and registration fees could have posed financial challenges without the support from local organizations.

The financial backing from the Port Elgin and Southampton Rotary Clubs, along with the prize funds from the NII, has made it possible for these students to represent SDSS and the Saugeen Shores community on a provincial stage.

Model United Nations programs offer students invaluable opportunities for leadership development, public speaking experience, and enhanced global awareness. These skills are essential for their future endeavors and extend well beyond the classroom.

SDSS expresses its heartfelt gratitude to the Port Elgin Rotary Club, Southampton Rotary Club, and Nuclear Innovation Institute for their unwavering support of youth, education, and community leadership. This collaboration exemplifies the importance of community partnerships in fostering the next generation of leaders.
